In modern life we tend to be experts in what we do, the places we go and the things we enjoy – but how much expertise do we have in ourselves?

 

Matt Elliot is a former professional rugby league player, head coach in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA National Team. He is the owner and founder of The Change Room, a well-being business and has authored a book by the same name. His ‘superpower’ is his ability to process knowledge and turn difficult concepts into simple language. This provides tools for people to create habits in their life that resonate with them, so they can become experts in themselves.

 

After spending years in changing rooms – a place of transformation – Matt understands you can’t get better without changing so, he has made it his life purpose to help people. “We’re all living life, so why not find a better way of doing it?” he says.

The core practice of leadership is the actions we choose to perform every day to lead ourselves. You can’t become a high achiever without including a range of elements in your life. Maintaining a balanced approach contributes to leading yourself well. This high-performance approach includes:

  1. Physical – do
  2. Mental – think
  3. Emotional – feel
  4. Human connection – community
  5. Spiritual actions – maintain inner self

 

In today’s episode, we learn that encountering challenges and going through adversity in life are signals for us to change. Unless we can find our change room to transform ourselves into who we want to be, rather than who we are, we get stuck. Being emotionally, mentally, or physically stuck has real consequences yet through science, there is proof that we can make ourselves better.

 

Things tend to be separated in modern life, but Matt explains how they are all connected. Just as focused breathing, sleeping well, eating in a way that serves us and movement are very central to our quality of health.

 

It is not about how long you live; it is about how you live. Who you are being, not what you are doing.

We are all different and looking after yourself is a personal thing. Matt believes that you can tell when someone is looking out for themselves and that elevates their ability to lead. If they are leading themselves, that means that they are equipped to lead you.
